I'm with Stupid
Leeds Metropolitan University Studio Theatre
Residency 10-14 March 2008
“some are born stupid, some achieve stupidness, and some have stupidness thrust
upon 'em” William Shakespeare(ish)
This March, Mind the Gap’s Acting Company were in residence, conducting a series
of theatrical experiments in and around Leeds Met University that aimed to shed light
on the very nature and art of stupidity.
They examined stupidity as a life strategy;
stupidity as a deliberate act. From their makeshift Arts Lab they made field trips
in search of Lab Rats to take part in all manner of pointedly pointless experiments.
In a wry turning of the tables where learning disabled people are researchers instead
of the subjects of research, the company asked, is stupidity contagious? Is
there a cure? Is it Art?
Preliminary research findings were revealed on Thursday 13 March, at 6.30pm. The audience was full, and everybody enjoyed the show.
What our audience thought
'I really enjoyed "I'm with stupid". For me it was a joyous celebration of stupidity and, I would like to think, a reclaiming of the word stupid.'
'I do hope that Mind the Gap will develop this work and that we will see more of it both locally and in other parts of the country'
'The chickens holding up the queue for the cash machine, roaming the Library shelves and dealing with enquires in the Job Shop went down especially well.'
'The cheers and whistles at the end brought the house down and most of the audience stayed for the Q+A afterwards - a sign of genuine involvement. It was a really uplifting occasion.'
