On 30th October 2009 we hosted Shadow People, an open-air event in the central courtyard of Lister Mills to celebrate our 21st birthday and a full year in our new home. Ed Davies gives us a daily account of the preparations and the event itself.

Shadow People Blog 1
Ed here, I'm co-facilitating this week with Alan on Shadow People. This week I should be on holiday but I have decided to come in and help with Shadow People (nothing to do with the fact that I had nothing else to do!). Here's what we've been up to so far. Shadow People is this half term's Outreach project, working with learning disabled and non-disabled participants. We are making a sort of performance piece using shadows which will be this Friday at 6pm.

'Day two in the Shadow People house...' This morning I had a short briefing and then we got ready to meet the participants. First thing the whole group played Grandmother's Footsteps outside on the decking. This is because on the night we will play a large version of the game with all the audience so this was our rehearsal.

Shadow People Blog 3
Today we gave Joyce an insight into British culture by showing her the Parrot sketch from Monty Python. Joyce is our new member of staff from Hong Kong who works with us in session. Alan and I were doing sketches from Monty Python and she didn't know what it was. This afternoon we watched some of the shadows that we have recorded in the last few days. They were loads of different people making all sorts of shapes.

Shadow People Blog 4
This morning we went out into the courtyard and had a walk through to see where we were being placed. We played Grandmother's Footsteps again, some of us imagined where we would be in the night and other people were pretending to be an audience. Then we watched more of the shadow footage from through the week. Stuart and Will from Lumen have been working with us all week and are making all the sound effects and shadow imagery. It's been really good working with them - when they haven't been working super hard cooped up in AV Studio putting all the stuff together.

Shadow People - The Final Blog
It happened! After all the hardwork and planning it all went according to plan. All the participants performed really well, and if they were nervous they didn’t show it. The event started off in the courtyard where friends and family of the participants were led out to. There were also the people who live in the mill. Most of them came out of their apartments entrance but there were also loads of people on their balcony and looking out of their windows watching.
