Mind the Gap is pleased to announce that the organisation will continue to be funded through Arts Council England’s National Portfolio for the next 4 years (2018 – 2022). The funding will enable Mind the Gap to continue its delivery of bold, cutting-edge and world-class theatre as well as developing the talents of artists with learning disabilities.

Executive Director Julia Skelton said, “the team here at Mind the Gap is thrilled to retain our NPO status, which will enable us to maintain our innovative, exciting touring programme across England. We look forward to building new partnerships with arts venues and communities, and continuing to develop existing ones”.

Arts Council England have also awarded MTG an uplift of £40,000 to run Staging Change, a new programme to address fundamental inequalities faced by learning disabled artists.

Julia continued, “This uplift of £40,000 p/a over the next NPO period will strengthen the company’s role in creating the conditions for learning disabled artists to be leaders. Learning-disabled artists are still largely overlooked and marginalised in the arts sector. We know it’s more powerful when people speak for themselves. Things are more likely to change if those with direct experience of learning disability address the lack of representation personally & directly. This new programme to skill-up and raise the profile of learning-disabled artists nationally and internationally”.

Over the next 4 years, Mind the Gap will continue to develop the Daughters of Fortune project, which tackles the subject of learning disability and parenthood. The company will also tour a playful and surreal new street theatre performance called Mirror Mirror, which premieres at this year’s Bradford Festival, and create a new dance theatre piece further down the line.
