Alan Clay’s Skip Rap is coming soon! - Mind the Gap

Alan Clay’s Skip Rap is coming soon!

Published 6 October 2017

In 2015 Mind the Gap Artist Alan Clay received almost £15,000 R&D funding from Arts Council England’s Grants for Arts scheme for a new piece of work called Skip Rap. Working with his chosen mentor (New York based spoken work artist, Baba Israel) on a residency at Mind the Gap, Alan created almost an hours worth of new material in just one week, leading to a work in progress sharing in July 2015.

We’re thrilled to let you know that Alan reapplied to ACE’s Grants for the Arts scheme and successfully secured almost £40,000 to fully develop and tour Skip Rap. This has been Alan’s first week of rehearsals with his fantastic team: Director Iain Bloomfield, Musicians Baba Israel, Andy Brooks (Testament) and Jez Colborne, Producer Hannah Woods and Production Designer Bethany Wells.

Alan Clay: “It’s already come a long way, we’re getting a lot done, all the 10 songs are sorted out. I’m feeling good, it’s going well, there’s new stuff been put in since last time, we’re figuring out how to get from one song to the next. If you like good stories about somebody’s life, come to this – it’s great music and it’s funny!”

Iain Bloomfield: “It’s been a super exciting week, really exciting. We’ve got artists from Leeds, America, Bradford, Huddersfield, Hip hop musicians, lyricists, designers all working on this piece, everyone is coming from different artistic places, so it’s a really different process, a fusion, and everyone has just jelled. Alan has literally world leading people working on Skip Rap, and is making something really original in a theatre context. The honesty of what Alan is talking about – his life in context – at its heart it’s a show about wanting to have the ability to live your life, to shine, but the world and politics around it stop you doing that. That is a story for absolutely everybody.”

The tour kicks off here at MTG Studios on 2nd & 3rd Feb 2018 (put it in your diary now!), before heading to Square Chapel Arts Centre (Halifax) and Arc (Stockton) – the tour is still booking, so look out for full dates coming soon.
